| OCTOBER 2010 |
Well this month was the big count down to the AMCA National, Judged by Shilon Bedford (Black Ice), which was held 18th-23rd Oct in Denver, Colorado, USA.
This year was very exciting for me as I was not only meeting up with old friends but finally getting to meet some of the all time greats in this breed (Dogs and people lol).
It was an amazing privilege to meet and be mentored ringside by Virginia "Penny" Devaney (Voyageur Alaskan Malamutes), a lady who bred one of the most legendary dogs in the history of this breed, Voyageur's Cougar, who I am very proud to co-own a Great Grand Daughter in Betty!

I was also honoured to get time to chat to Barbara Brookes who co-wrote the Alaskan Malamute "Bible":
'The Alaskan Malamute Yesterday and Today'. What an amazing lady and she imparted some brilliant advice. This excellent book has just been re-printed in paperback so if your interested in this breed it's definitely a must buy!
Barbara,me, Sharon Loades (Snowolf), Shelley Turner(Kataku).
Lorna Muir (Oopik Alaskan Malamutes) also took time out to chat and school me in the finer points of Malamute construction. Big thank you to all three of these Ladies it was awe-inspiring to chat with all of you.
I would also like to thank the following people for making the trip one to remember: Sharon Loades (my mentor), Gaylene Robertson, Leslie Jeske, Connie Hammenshøj, Karen Taylor, Leesa Thomas, Shelley and Merv Turner, Sandra Bohay and last but not least, co-owner of Betty Joyce Delay.

On the 17th of Sept a few friends (Sharon Loades, Hayley Henworth, Lindsey Cox) and I traveled to Saint-Honore-Les-Bains, France for the Alaskan Malamute De France Club show (18/19th). Over 194 dogs entered over the 2 days. Flash was graded Excellent under FCI regulations/Breed Standard and then was assessed via 3 Breed specialists Robin Hug (USA), M Jean-Claude Valette (FR) and Mme Pary Dauvet (FR) for his International breeding assessment (Selectionne) which he passed with flying colours.
 Flash (2yrs
old) Picture Kindly taken by Alessandro Avigni
Flash also passed his Test D'aptitude Naturelle (TAN) which is a French temperament test which is one of the pre-requisite for breeding in France/Internationally. He is only the 2nd British Malamute in the UK and 1st British bred dog to gain this title.
Then to finish the weekend off with a bang, Flash in his Open Dog class came 3rd out of 42 dogs, quite an achievement for our young pride and joy!
 Flash very
excited about his 3rd Picture kindly taken by Hayley Henworth (Wolfraven

We all enjoyed this trip and would like to thank all the AMCF Committee and all the exhibitors for making us feel so welcome.

Kura, Indy and Flash all now have their CHIC numbers and their DNA will be stored in the USA to help with future research in Breed related health issues. I would encourage ALL breed enthusiasts to put forward the DNA of their dogs, they depend on us!
More GREAT NEWS from the AMCA working committee, Indy and Flash now have gained their Working Pack Dog (WPD) titles (Indy WPD 648, Flash WPD 647). We are very proud of both our boys and hope as the winter months get closer we can work towards their next titles.

| JUNE 2010 |
Katabatic would like to welcome two new gorgeous girlie's to our pack, Am Ch Kaviak's Whoa Black Betty "Betty" (USA imp), please check out her page, for info, plus future exciting breeding plans and Lexi (awaiting KC official name) a beautiful Snowolf bitch kindly given to us by good friend and mentor Sharon Loades (Snowolf).
Lexi is out of two awe-inspiring Alaskan Malamutes her Sire, Am Ch Black Ice's High Voltage "Charger" bred by Shilon Bedford (Black Ice)/owned by Karen Taylor and Dam, Hyteton Tebo Miss Magnum by Snowolf "Kisi" bred by Jill Broadberry (Hyteton)/owned by Sharon Loades. This breeding was not only special due to the combination of these pedigree's, but due to the fact that this is ONLY 2nd successful Malamute breeding to have taken place by Artificial Insemination (AI) in the UK! By doing an AI breeding this is going above and beyond, to open up new lines into the UK for the good of the breed as a whole.

Both these girls (Betty and Lexi) ooze quality, its this quality which can only be gained by careful breeding, to fabulous constructed dogs with outstanding temperaments! All of which we aspire to do in our long term breeding plan. We hope that both these girls will bring a sound foundation to our kennel to move forward and help maintain this breed in the UK.

At Blackpool Championship show (27th June) Under Judge Mrs F A Somerfield, Flash takes 4th in Post Graduate Dog in a class of 14 entries and Indy takes 3rd in Limit Dog in a class of 11 entries which means all the boys are Crufts qualified for 2011!
In other news the AMCUK have brilliantly decided to set up a breed health sub-committee which will hold meetings to bring forward issues within the breed, help with health awareness, funding/fund raising and very importantly getting the DNA/blood samples required for the research to continue. Thus one day providing us with more informed breeding practices, ie DNA status for you dog/bitch regarding certain hereditary issues.

Kura has been busy training for her Working Pack Dog title with the boys, our rig is nearly completed after a complete overhaul ready for the autumn/winter training. We have also been very busy preparing for our soon to be increasing pack, a new Malamute Mobile (van) was in order! lol.
After thinking long and hard about where we wish our breeding program to go, we decided to have Kura spayed. We very much love Rafa her father and hopefully wish to incorporate his lines in our breedings at a later date.

| APRIL 2010 |
At West of England Ladies Kennel Society Championship Show on the 25th April (under Breed Specialist Sharon Loades - Snowolf) Flash takes 2nd in Yearling Dog and Indy was shortlisted in Limit in one the strongest classes of the day.
 Flash on
the move (22mths) WWell the start of the month went with a BANG with official conformation from the Kennel Club that Flash "Tailfly Turnround Glider at Katabatic" has been awarded his Junior Warrant (JW). Flash is only the sixth Malamute in the Country to have this hard earned title. I also believe that we are the FIRST Non-breeder/Owner to be awarded this prestigious title. This also means that Flash has been awarded his Stud book Number and has Qualified for Crufts for life!
More great news.....Flash in this year's AMCUK Malamute of the year (MOYA) results came 5th in Top Puppy, 7th in Special Top Beginners and16th in Top Dogs, amazing considering he was only qualified for each category for a few months.
Kura also came 14th and Indy 15th in Top Special Beginners category as you can imagine very proud of all 3 of our gorgeous malamutes.
I am also happy to report that i am now on the AMCUK committee, i hope to gain more knowledge and protect this amazing breed for generations to come. |
| MARCH 2010 |
At beginning of the month Indy went to Wales to do some Mountain training with RAF Search and Rescue check out our
Gallery Page for all the pics.
After a very busy few months with Flash being campaigned for the Junior Warrant, we decided only to a couple of shows this month, but it just happens to be the month of the Biggest dog show in the world
Crufts (11Th March/working day).
Flash gain a very respectable VHC in Yearling Dog under Judge Mr D Killilea.
Sadly Indy wasn't placed in Limit the biggest class of the day with 17 entries but still had a brilliant day, making lots of new friends/people interested in getting into the breed.

 Indy at the Table |
At West Torrington and District Canine Club (20th March) Under Judge Mrs A Johns (Alepenkye) Flash

We are slowing working towards Flash's Show Certificate of Merit, which is going very well over three quarters of the points gained so not long now!
br>
Indy continues over the month in the hills with Kyle enjoying long walks accruing legs for his Working Pack Dog title, love watching him in action.

Due to Unforeseen circumstances the Planned mating between Kura and Astro didn't take place, Kura is being withdrawn from our breeding program to concentrate on the working/rallying season for 2011.
Astro's semen is a brilliant asset to our future breeding program, he will be hopefully used in the not to distant future.
**********************AMAZING NEW FROM USA*********************
We are very pleased to announce the up coming import of a Top American Champion!
This is a once in a life time Malamute, Stay tuned for more news!
|
| JANUARY 2010 |
Good Start to 2010 at Boston and District Canine Society (9th Jan) Championship Show Under Judge Nicola Singh (Breed Specialist) Flash takes 1st in Junior Dog, and Kura takes VHC in Post Graduate Bitch which was the Strongest class of the Day!
At Manchester General Championship show (23rd Jan) Under Judge Mr M Plummer, Flash takes VHC in Junior Dog.
We at Katabatic like to invest in the Future of the Breed so made the decision to put our dogs DNA towards the research database/bank in America called CHIC (Canine Health Information Center) as our breed hales from America and the vase amount of Malamute Kennels/Knowledge resides there, this for me was a no brain-er.
This information can only be used to help the breed in the future, so when problems do occur they have DNA and the genealogy to hopefully get to the route of the problem quickly, thus moving forward to possibly finding a cure/treatment.
In your interested in getting involved please click on the link below for more info!

& At East of England Ladies Kennel Society (30th Jan) Under Judge Mrs G
